I know there's some fans who don't dig this series because Crow can be a bit... too mean? I don't know. Honestly, I love the series. It's unfortunate it ended at 8 books as I'm sure there were plenty of other stories to be told.
And I'm loving that Piccadilly Publishing is reprinting the entire series in an e-book format. I'm buying each one and can't wait for the next (even though I already own them all).
What do you think about Crow? Is he too violent?

This is going to sound weird coming from the publisher, but yes -- in my opinion, CROW was a step too far. I get the feeling that Laurence James, in mischievous mode, was constantly trying to see just what he could get away with.

For me ,when he shot the dog for no reason in the first few pages of the first book, that did it for me, and I did not go any further

You're missing some good reading. Of course, I really liked the fact that he shot the dog. That simply cemented Crow as one of my favorite gunslingers.

Hi John, I know I am a softy, but I like to hold out a hope that a hero can have a line they do not cross, and that line differs for all of us. I like Dirty Harry, Jack Reacher, Harry Bosch, Elvis Cole, Joe Pike, Edge, Steele,Breed. Joe Dante. Did not like "The Wire" TV cos in the first episode he shot one of his own men, Is he a goody or a baddie? I never found out Thanks,

It's all good, my friend. Like you mention, there's different mileage for all of us.
Saying that, I can't wait for March and CROW #4. Good things come to those who wait, I suppose. But man, what a lllooonnnggg time!

I just read a "review" (if that's what you want to call it) for THE BLACK TRAIL on Amazon. The user gave the book one star due to the "N Word" being used too often.
Hmm...
What do others think about this?

I myself think that the language should reflect the time in which the story is set, but never gratuitously, just for the hell of it. At the moment I'm just proofing the first RANCHO BRAVO book, CALHOON, for ebook publication. It is a superb western, and the N-word features prominently. But its use stems from the characters of the period, and the language of the period. One has to accept that, accept that this is historical accuracy and in no way trying to be offensive to a modern audience, and frankly not be so darn sensitive!

The idea is to bring these books back either exactly as they were originally published, or with very, very SLIGHT modifications (mostly eliminating original typos etc). We're NOT in the business of censorship, and have to rely on the author's good taste ... or in the case of CROW, his lack of it!!
