Like ZZ Top, I've never considered them southern rock.

Saying that, I do really like them. Heck, I'm one of the few fans who truly enjoys MARDI GRAS.

Steve: Since I know you're a Blackfoot fan, too, I was wondering what you thought about the SIOGO and VERTICAL SMILES albums? I know it's blasphemy to say that one enjoys them, but I love the heck outta the pair. I really dig VERTICAL SMILES.

I never bought them and don't believe I've heard them either so can't comment on them.

Okie dokie.
As you probably already know, it's a different Blackfoot sound from their previous albums. A lot of fans don't like either release, but I dig them both.

BLACKBERRY SMOKE and WHISKEY MYERS.

Not Southern but a great western themed album is VOLBEAT's latest: Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies. With tracks titled The Hangman's Body Count, Lola Montez, Black Bart, Lonesome Rider, and Doc Holliday it's pure western through and through. Here's a link to Doc Holliday, one of their heavier tracks. (How many western movies can you pick out from this?) www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Qdz5GZwn-8

While I'm waiting for those to arrive, I can't get Molly Hatchet out of the stereo. We desperately need a new album from this band.

I received both the Volbeat and Blackfoot albums yesterday. I've given them a few spins, so here's what I think...
RICK MEDLOCKE AND BLACKFOOT: It's pretty bad. It's also sad that Medlocke is the only original member appearing on the album. It sounds like bad 80s hair metal. And the worst songs are those written by Medlocke. Go figure. I'm glad I have it in the collection, but I seriously doubt I'll be listening to it much.
Volbeat: This is a pretty darned good album. My favorite track remains "Doc Holliday," though. I'd recommend it.
