Way back when I was a teenager and western books lined the shelves of bookshops I used to see loads of books by Lewis B. Patten. Never did get around to buying any of them though. Recently I picked up a few but have only got around to reading one of them; The Red Sabbath (you can read my review of it here: westernfictionreview.blogspot.co.uk/2012/06/red-sabbath.htmlSo I was wondering if anyone could recommend any specific titles to me?

Well, DEATH OF A GUNFIGHTER springs to mind, which was filmed in 1969 (I think) with Richard Widmark, Lena Horne and my old friend John Saxon. Patten's view of the west was rather harsh and cheerless. There was nothing even remotely romanticised about it. Most of all, however, I liked his attitude to writing -- he was a true craftsman, but when asked what his motivation for writing was, he would always reply: "An unpaid bill." No nonsense with Patten!

Ha! I can understand that. I've never read this particular author, though. Sounds interesting. And that's cool you're friends with John Saxon. I've always thoroughly enjoyed his films.

Aw, what a name-dropper! "My old friend John Saxon" indeed! He's a great guy, though, and he has aged magnificently. Still keeps himself fit in a home-gym he kitted out himself.

Have finally decided to do something about Lewis B. Patten and am presently reading my way through his entire output. Currently on THE TRAIL OF THE APACHE KID, and it's good.

Sounds decent. I might have to give him a day in court.
Of course, I'm still awed that your friends with John Saxon. I think that's so cool! The next time you speak with him, let him know that I'm a BIG fan!
