Edge by George G. Gilman was the series that really got me hooked on western fiction. I just couldn't get enough of them. The mix of violent action and gallows humor really struck a chord with me and I remember checking the shops every week for a new one.

Also good to see that the later unpublished novels are now out as e-books. Other titles from the Piccadilly Cowboys are being re-issued by Piccadilly Publishing. Edge, Jubal Cade, Herne The Hunter were part of the big change in western writing.

Yeah, it's funny how memories stay with you. I remember walking home from school one day and spotting APACHE DEATH in a shop window. I immediately bought it, and then spotted a full-page advert on the back of a New English Library magazine called TARGET, which showed the covers of the first four books. After that I bought everything as it came out and lapped it up!

The mention of TARGET has brought back another memory. I had a poster of the fifth EDGE book that carried that logo. Can't remember how I came by the poster. Sadly, it's long since fallen to pieces.

Some folks can't dig Crow because he's a bit too offensive, so what about Edge? Aside from Crow, I'd say he's the meanest character that was created in the PC-verse. So what differentiates Edge from Crow in the badass department?

I think Edge had a bit more humanity to him. Every so often you'd see a little reference or a line of dialogue which hinted at the fact that Edge really would sooner have led a different life. And I think that is the difference between Edge and Crow. Crow had no redeeming qualities at all. Plus, he was a caricature more than a character. As I said before, I really think Laurence James sat down and thought, "Okay, let's make this as offensively outrageous as we can and see just what I can get away with." And to everyone's surprise the fans lapped it up!

When I went back and read the books in the correct sequence, I spotted all kinds of things in there, little references to periods in Edge's life that are mentioned in passing but which Terry never expanded upon. It was pretty interesting to speculate what he would have done with Edge in such situations.

EDGE was way ahead of its time. I hope it's selling well now that it's back.
